A lot of research went into the type of wax we would be using here at Ahimsa Essentials Candle Co. before we started creating and selling our products.
As we looked at what was being sold in the current market, we found that paraffin wax candles, which are made by some of the biggest sellers of candles in the world like The Yankee Candle Company, were dominating sales. Now, here's a little bit of history for you. The candle industry in the US makes about $2 billion a year. That's a lot of paraffin wax candles being sold if you're average 4 oz. paraffin candle sells for $5 or less! Of course, there are plenty of other kinds of candles being purchased that add to those margins but just alone The Yankee Candle Company brought in over $844 million in revenue in 2012, just 4 years after the US financial market crashed. That's saying something.
So, with paraffin wax candles being so popular and companies like The Yankee Candle Company booming with sales, why did we decide to use soy wax over paraffin wax?
Because we care about you, we care about the environment, and we live by ahimsa.
Here's a breakdown of some of the most basic and important information we wanted to share with you all about the soy wax that makes Ahimsa Essentials Candle Co. candles so great in comparison to paraffin wax candles.
We would love to hear your thoughts and answer any questions you have about soy wax candles so feel free to leave us a comment below!
Ahimsa Essentials Candle Co. candles are…
“US grown and supplied by family farms”
Our soy wax is made from Kosher, non-GMO certified soy beans grown in the U.S. and supplied by family farms that have been in the business for generations over hundreds of years! It was important to us when we started Ahimsa Essentials Candle Co. that our money and the money of our customers was going to be invested in the growers, the workers, and the land soy beans are grown on by using soy wax that supported individuals and families working on farms instead of large corporations. Unfortunately, this is not the case when it comes to who benefits from the production and sales of crude oil and petroleum in the US.
By using soy wax candles you are making a conscious and considerate choice to support the environment. When you buy a soy wax candle, you’re encouraging plants to be grown, farm communities to flourish, and the Earth to be renewed rather than depleted.
In contrast, when you purchase paraffin wax candles, you are using your dollars to support and increase the unnecessary deep drilling into our earth’s surface and below ocean beds to extract crude oil which continues to have extreme and detrimental long term effects on the environment.
The effects include but are not limited to:
- irreversible damage caused to public lands, rivers, lakes, and the ocean
- dangerous methane emissions contributing to global warming
- disruption of marine and wildlife migration routes, habitats, and mating
- risk of oil spills (i.e. 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Gulf of Mexico)
- mercury, lead, and arsenic released into the ocean during the process of offshore drilling

In addition to soy wax, palm wax made from palm oil (that has not been created by aiding in the deforestation of other countries lands and rainforests), coconut wax made from coconut oil, and beeswax are other great natural alternatives to paraffin wax. At Ahimsa Essentials Candle Co. we support all natural, environmentally friendly alternatives to paraffin wax and chose to make our candles with soy wax because it is readily available in the US and vegan.
Our commitment here at Ahimsa Essentials Candle Co. is to bring the most sustainable, natural, and environmentally friendly products we can to our communities without sacrificing quality or affordability. Through operating with the principles of ahimsa at the forefront of our actions and decisions, we continue to consciously consider what's at stake when it comes to the health and wellbeing of our fellow humans and the environment. We are determined to alter the way that people, and especially the way that companies, interact with each other and with our earth. It is our promise to you that we will continue to lead the way in making small changes one at a time that will make a world of difference.
